How To Prepare Meat Pie
Meat
pie is one of the meat snacks with a filling of precooked carrots, minced meat,
potatoes, onions and even spices. It serves well in any occasion and is also a
good snack to share during family hours and with friends. Plus, it’s very easy
to make! The meat pie recipe is an easy one and all the ingredients can be gotten
in any foodstore/market.
So, here is what you will need to get started.
Ingredients:
For
the meat pie dough:
- 5 cups of flour
- A pinch of salt
- 1 large egg (optional)
- 250g margarine/ 1 sachet of margarine
- water (as required)
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- Binder (1 tablespoon flour + 3 tablespoon water)
For the meat pie filling:
- 1 can of minced beef (medium size). You can also buy regular meat and cook till tender, then pound or grate to pieces.
- 2 large carrots
- Seasoning cubes and salt to taste
- 3 large Irish potatoes
- 1 large onion
- 1 teaspoonful of dried pepper (optional)
- 2 tablespoonful of vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon curry and thyme powder
- Flour paste (3 tablespoon flour + 6-9 tablespoon water)

of the meat pie filling:
- Wash and dice the potatoes, onions and carrots
- Boil and drain the diced potatoes and carrots. Do not overcook
- Fry the minced meat, diced onion and seasoning in the vegetable oil.
- Add seasoning, salt, curry, thyme and pepper. You may add a little water to prevent burning.
- Add the flour paste, stir. Do not let it dry up.
- Once cooked, set aside to cool while you work on the batter.
- Add the flour into a mixing bowl, add salt, margarine and rub in the margarine using the tip of your fingers
- Make a well within the flour and add water
- Gently mix in the water and then leave to rest for few minutes
- Transfer the batter onto a clean flat surface and roll out flat using a rolling pin until it is about 2 centimeters thick
- Place on a pie cutter or use a cup to cut into round shapes
- Put some filling on the batter and seal. Rub some binder on the edge of the pastry to aid proper sealing.
- Use a fork or meat pie cutter to close the edges and then, vent the top of the pie using a fork
- Bake in an oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown
- Glaze the surface of the pie with egg to make it shiny and place in the oven again to dry for about 3 minutes.
- Remove from oven and serve with any chilled drink.
